At Francis Scott Key, we expect students to model their very best behavior at all times. In the event that a student does not follow the school policies and procedures, the following consequences may follow:
- Loss of privileges (ex. trips)
- Detention with a teacher or administrator (*Detention may be assigned by any faculty member. Students and parents are expected to arrange for transportation as necessary.)
- Additional assignments
Office Referral: This is when a teacher sends a student to an administrator because of poor conduct. Students are to report directly to the appropriate grade level administrators office. In the event that the administrator is not in his/her office, students are to return to the classroom.
Short Term Suspension: This is a temporary removal from school for up to ten days due to misbehavior. The administrators have the sole power to place a student on short term suspension. The administrator may reinstate a student after a successful conference with a parent. Students will be given a work packet that is expected to be completed and returned when reinstated. Failure to complete work may result in lower grades.
Some examples of misbehavior which may result in short term suspension include: fighting/assault, theft, habitual misconduct, smoking, vandalism, foul/indecent language, insubordination, illegal entry, chronic lateness, cheating, gambling, etc.
Long Term Suspension: This is a temporary removal from school due to student misbehavior. The case is referred to the Office of Attendance and Suspension for review. That office may assign a student to an alternative placement, return him/her to FSK, send him/her to another school, or expel him/her from the Baltimore City Public Schools. The principal has the sole power to recommend a student for long term suspension through the Office of Suspension.
Some examples of misbehavior which may result in long term suspension are those listed above and possession of a weapon or look-alike weapon, threat to injure, assault/battery, chronic misconduct, sexual harassment, indecent exposure, possession/use of drugs/alcohol, gross insubordination, theft, inciting a disturbance, false fire alarms, etc.
