The Students Against Starting Smoking (SASS) initiative is a peer leadership program sponsored by the Department of Heath and Mental Hygiene and the Maryland State Department of Education. For each of the last two years, our school has received a grant from these organizations. This funding is provided to selected middle Schools for the establishment of a SASS Club.
Our school is able to choose and plan our own activities. However, we focus our activities on the main purpose of the SASS Program in Maryland; which is to teach students to overcome pressure to use tobacco,
and to empower students to take action to prevent others from becoming tobacco users.
Students volunteer to participate in the program and are provided a variety of activities to help promote the (above) ideals of the organization - Students Against Starting Smoking. Our members have "manned" a booth at the Annual School 76 community October-Fest; they have promoted the signing of a pledge for students to remain smoke-free; have "spread the word" about the dangers of smoking and of passive smoke through the use of posters and by going into classrooms to speak with their peers. Three of our members have created PowerPoint presentations to share with others. Their presentations can be seen here:
