Please contact the Math Team Leader, Ms. Beverly to schedule an
appointment at 410-396-1503.

Each Math Teacher has set aside an afternoon from 3:05 to 3:30 to help students, make-up tests, or catch- up on problem sets. This is the coach class schedule :
Getting Too Cold Outside To Play ?

The Game of 24 is an exciting math game that uses the four basic operations, mental math and speed. The pile of 24 cards are placed in the circle of a group of 4 players. Each card has 4 numbers on the card. The first player who can combine all 4 digits using any operation that equals 24 taps the card. If the player has a correct solution the player gets to keep the card. At the end of the round the player with the most points wins.
Students who are interested in playing for fun or competition are invited to join. The city holds an annual competition for the 24 game called the 24 challenge sponsored by First National Bank in April. Students who are interested in the city wide challenge should sign-up. Students must come with a good attitude and have a permission slip signed by a guardian. The club is sponsored by Ms. Murphy and Ms. Pillion. Students can sign up with their math teacher and take home the permission slip to be signed. The club began meeting the first Thursday of the month in November.
Getting the best grade possible on the Maryland Functional Tests ensures your getting into the best city high schools. Many students from Francis Scott Key have gone on to Poly, City, Western, Dunbar, Mergenthaler, Edmondson/Westside, and Carver. There are also excellent programs at your zoned (by address) high school. Ours is usually Southern High School. The Bio Tech program at Sourthern also follows the application process that city wide high schools use.
The criteria for being accepted at the above schools are:
80% or better grades for June of the 7th grade report cards.
No more than 10 days of absence on the 8th grade report card.
CTBS scores in reading and math are at high levels.
Passing the Maryland Functional Tests are part of the Statewide Criteria for receiving a High School Diploma. A score of 340 is the passing score in each area. Most students achieve these scores by 8th grade if they work well with their teacher.
The other requirement for graduation that can be started at the middle school level is 75 hours of community service is necessary to receive a diploma. Please turn in your service hours that you have already earned to Mrs. Berggren, the school guidance counselor.

You may be asking yourself what all the fuss is about. Well let me tell you,.... It all started as a result of Mr. Coons trying to motivate his students to have perfect attendance and participation in his class. Students are awarded "Coons Classroom Cash" in $ 1, 5, and 10 dollar denominations on a daily basis. Furthermore, Student's are awarded cash on a weekly based for their attendance, as well as for their birthday. Students save their money until the monthly auction held on the last friday of the month. They are then allowed to bid for prizes and rewards if they choose,..... or they can SAVE their money till the next auction. The use of this token economy has really taken off with his students. Not only does it teach real life math skills such as money, saving accounts, and budgeting,.....It's GREAT FUN for all involved.
Some of the prizes available at the last auction
- Use pencil !!!! Ink is too messy.
- Copy your problems correctly from your text .... Most students get problems wrong simply because they copy them incorrectly.
- Take your time .... Rushing can cause you to be careless and sloppy.
- Check the homework hotline .... Did you do the correct work assigned ?
- Have a parent check it out.
- Use a calculator .... only when directed to .... and only to check your answers.
- SHOW ALL WORK .... Your teacher or parent cannot help you when they cannot see what you did to get your answer.
